Permit Letter to Ship Human Remains
The Embassy of Nigeria in Vienna issues Permit Letters for the Shipment of Human Remains to Nigeria to facilitate the dignified repatriation of deceased Nigerian citizens. This permit letter is required by authorities in Nigeria and Austria before human remains can be transported out of the country and into Nigeria for final burial.
To obtain this permit, the next of kin or an authorized representative must submit a formal request along with supporting documents to the Embassy of Nigeria Vienna.
Please review the list of required documents to submit you application for a Permit Letter to Ship Human Remains to Nigeria
- Copy of Death Certificate.
- Copy of Transit or Burial Permit.
- Original copy of Non-Communicable Disease Letter issued by Coroners Medical Examiner, State or City Health Agency.
- Original Notarized Embalmer’s Affidavit stating how the body was embalmed.
- Original Notarized Letter from Funeral Home stating that the body has been placed in a hermetically sealed metal casket.
- The deceased's Nigerian passport (if not available, a relative with a valid Nigerian Passport should swear a notarized affidavit stating their relationship and that the deceased is a Nigerian).
- The Embassy of Nigeria Vienna does not charge a fee for this service.
- Contact name, address and telephone number of the receiving party in Nigeria.
- Permit Letter is collected in person by official of the contracted Funeral Home and is not sent by post
- Letter from the Funeral Home requesting the Embassy of Nigeria Vienna to issue a permit letter to ship the human remains to Nigeria.
- Waiver for the Repatriation of the Corpse from the Federal Ministry of Health, Port Health Services, Abuja.
